BELL RINGERS WANTED

22/02/2010

LEARN A NEW HOBBY
Anyone living in Newport will be familiar with the sound of the bells ringing out on Sundays and other festive occasions.
The Minster Church of Sts Thomas has 12 bells, with the heaviest weighing 128 stones. It is amazing that with technique and not strength, such heavy bells can be rung with ease.
The Carisbrooke and Newport Bellringers ring the bells at both St Mary's and the Minster Church of Sts Thomas, Newport, and are always looking for new recruits to join their friendly team.
Bellringing is an enjoyable, social hobby and does not cost anything. How many hobbies are totally free? You can even be paid for ringing at weddings.
For all those who enjoy hearing the bells or who want to find out more about joining the bellringers, there is a chance to visit the bell tower at Newport and watch a demonstration of ringing technique during a special open day in February.
Visitors can even have a go at pulling a rope or two.
